The quick basics: We offer fee hunting here at Horseshoe Bend Ranch for up to 4 rifle hunters per field per season. You can book your party of 4 for the whole season in a large field, or your smaller party for either the first weekend and week, or second weekend and week. We are also offering up to 2 archery hunters per field for all of late archery season. We are not hunting any other season this year. We have slots open now for the 2010 Hunting Season.
As always, fields will be reserved based on seniority, so if you hunted a field last year at a given time you will have right of first refusal for this year. Fields book up fast, reserve your field early. Seniority will be lost for fields not booked 60 days before opening day!v
All the pictures you see on this site were taken here at Horseshoe Bend Ranch, and are of animals and game from here.
About Horseshoe Bend Ranch:
Horseshoe Bend Ranch is a working cattle, wheat, alfalfa and timber operation that covers over 3300 acres of land on the breaks of the Little Klickitat River in Klickitat County, Washington. Terrain available for hunting ranges in elevation from around 800 feet to over 1700 feet, with the great majority of the terrain in the 1400 to 1600 foot range. We front the south side of the Little Klickitat River for 3 or 4 miles depending on how you measure it.
Hunting Horseshoe Bend Ranch:
We are in GMU 388 Grayback. In 2006 the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife decided our deer should be reclassified as Mule Deer instead of Black-tailed, so they changed them all to Mule Deer (they are actually the same species). What that means to you is that all deer taken must be 3-point or better on at least one side, unless you have a tag that allows antlerless deer. See the Washington Big Game Hunting Rules for all the official rules and details.
Hunting at Horseshoe Bend Ranch is subject to all Washington State legal hunting regulations, and all hunters must be properly licensed by Washington State for the animals they are hunting. All current Washington Big Game Hunting Rules for GMU 388 Grayback apply while hunting at Horseshoe Bend Ranch.

Horseshoe Bend Ranch is prime habitat for Mule Deer. The ranch has three large open fields that we hunt, and each one of those has considerable amounts of woodland, meadows and canyons associated with it.
Heavy spring rains this year are really bringing on the grasses and forbs. We should see some nice, fat healthy deer this fall with great racks. We also set out wildlife salt licks year round, in addition to keeping the stock watering tanks full through rifle season.
There are also other fields that we do not hunt that serve as refuge areas to ensure a strong deer population. Last year’s hunters averaged a take of 50%, and over the last 9 years the average has been about 40%.
Modern and Archery Hunters Welcome!
Traditionally, most of our hunters have been modern rifle hunters, but archery hunters are welcome, too! Rifle season is usually the last 2 weeks in October, October 16th through the 29th. Archery hunting at Horseshoe Bend Ranch will be late season only this year (which is November 24th through December 8th) and is a buck only season unless you draw a special antlerless permit. Exact dates have not yet been determined by the Wildlife Department. The Big Game Hunting Regulation Pamphlet has all the details. These are the only seasons we will be hunting deer at the Ranch.
Inclusions with Your Hunting:
We value you as our guest while you hunt at Horseshoe Bend Ranch. We want you to have a great time and truly enjoy your hunting experience. Fee hunting has a number of extra benefits and perks:
- Private hunting in your own large area (over a square mile!) for up to two weeks for your party, or the entire late season for archery hunters.
- Camping in your field while deer hunting.
- Use your or our ATV to haul out your kill (weather permitting).
- Limited Hunters – we plan in advance how many deer we want taken, and we limit the number of parties to keep the hunting good for everyone. A total of 6 parties will be allowed during rifle season, and an additional 3 parties during archery season. The maximum number of hunters per party is 4, with a maximum of 4 hunters per field during rifle season, and 2 per field during archery season.
- Unlimited non-armed scouting of your field before your hunt.
- Target practice in our target range area 10 days or more before hunting season.
- 5 free days of gray-digger (California Ground Squirrel) hunting during the following year.
- Unlimited free cougar hunting during cougar season.
Turkey Hunting:
We are working with Adventure Fishing for guided turkey hunts on the ranch. At this time this is our only option for turkey hunting. Contact them and ask to hunt at Horseshoe Bend Ranch, and they will take care of all the details for a great hunt for you.
Fishing:
We are seeking an outfitter for guided fishing trips on the ranch. This is our only option for fishing access to the approximately 4 miles of isolated Little Klickitat river fronting the ranch. If you are interested in fishing you will need to arrange with our outfitter – contact us for details.
Other Game Hunting:
With your deer hunting you also get the opportunity to do some hunting at other times in the year:
- Cougars – Yes! We consider cougars a nuisance and a threat to our kides, pets and livestock. There are cougar attacks on horses and livestock in our immediate area almost every year. There is free cougar hunting with any paid deer hunting. Note that cougar season varies yearly in our area may not coincide with rifle or archery season in our unit, in which case you can legally only shoot a cougar if it is a threat. See and abide by the Washington Big Game Hunting Regulation Pamphlet.
- Gray Digger (California Ground Squirrel) hunting is free for 5 days during the year with paid deer hunting
- We do not allow bear, elk or other game animal hunting
- We do not allow other bird hunting at this time, except Turkey as noted above
- Occasional coyote and porcupine hunting may available to our deer hunters during the year, depending on the population and problems we may be having.
